Plano's suburban depth rarely gets its due next to Dallas steakhouse spectacle, and Sichuan Folk is the kind of room that argues the point without trying. It sits in a strip mall, does not dress itself up, and works because the kitchen is committed to the numbing, layered heat that defines Sichuan cooking rather than the sweetened version most Chinese-American menus settle for. Mapo tofu is the anchor dish, and the version here leans into the mala tingle, chili oil and fermented bean paste doing real work instead of coasting on soy sauce. Chongqing chicken follows the same logic: bone-in, dry-fried, buried in whole dried chilies and Sichuan peppercorn, built for people who want the heat to announce itself rather than hide.
Dan dan noodles round out the core menu, sesame paste and chili oil over pork and scallion, a dish that lives or dies on balance and reads as well-calibrated rather than one-note. None of this is Tex-Mex or steakhouse Dallas. It is the other half of the city's food story, the one that runs through Richardson, Carrollton and Plano rather than Uptown or the Design District, and it rewards diners willing to drive north of LBJ for it. The room is set up for groups and shared plates, not a date-night hush, and the pricing sits in the moderate range, built for repeat visits rather than a special occasion.
There is no reservations culture here; it reads as a walk-in, order-and-share operation, and turns come fast enough that a group can settle in without much friction. What Sichuan Folk is not is a polished, see-and-be-seen room, and it does not need to be. It is doing the harder, more honest work of running an authentic regional Chinese menu in a Plano strip mall, competing on flavor rather than atmosphere, and that is exactly the kind of place the suburban corridor does well and Dallas proper too often ignores.
