Royal Lane's case for seafood without the show

TJ's Seafood Market & Grill runs a format Dallas has mostly ceded to the coasts: the fish market with a kitchen attached. The room sits in a Royal Lane shopping strip on the Preston side of North Dallas, market case up front, grill and fryer behind it, and the case deciding more of the menu than the printed page does. What came in fresh is what the night is about, and the specials follow the case rather than the calendar.

The orders sort into two schools. The fried catfish platter is the measure of the fry station and the family-dinner default, while the grilled red snapper shows what the case looks like with the kitchen doing the least possible to it. Oysters and fries is the record's sleeper order, half raw bar and half comfort plate, and the bar earns its own mentions, the margaritas pulling reviews without a single bite of food attached.

The record is a neighborhood record. Bright, clean room, booths, a strip-center parking lot that never becomes part of the problem, and family tables that treat it as the standing seafood answer. The demand this format makes is consistency between the case and the grill, and that is the whole game for a market room: the fish has already made the case for itself, and the kitchen's only job is not to argue with it.

The placement is the practical argument. North Dallas keeps its errands and its dinners close, and a seafood market that can seat the family after the counter transaction saves the intown drive entirely. Open daily for lunch and dinner, later on Friday and Saturday, TJ's Seafood Market & Grill is the neighborhood's case for skipping the reservation apps and trusting the case in front of it.

The market case sets the night's menu, so check what came in before ordering from the grill; the specials follow the case, not the calendar.

What earns the 5.6

01
Market attached to kitchen

The seafood counter next door does the vetting the menu depends on, and the arrangement gives the room its case for freshness.

02
Gulf Coast staples done straight

Crawfish boil, fried catfish, grilled snapper: the menu runs the standard Gulf Coast lineup without chasing trend dishes.

03
Built for the family table

No-frills room and moderate pricing point squarely at family seafood dinners rather than date-night spectacle.

How we score

The Insider Score is our own 10-point editorial rating, set by the writer who covers the room. It is never an average of other sites’ stars, and it is never for sale. It weighs three things:

01Track record

How highly a kitchen rates, across how many diners, over how long.

02Consistency

Whether recent diners still agree with the long-term verdict.

03Distinction

What the kitchen does that its category does not.

TJ's Seafood Market & Grill earns a 5.6, solid on our scale for Seafood in Dallas.
